History of Weightlifting Bar Contact Rules

May 5, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Today I learned…

Up to 1964 you were not supposed to touch the bar to your legs, although few lifts were turned down if only the shins were touched.

From 1965 to 1968 one could “brush” the thighs but not “bang” or “bounce” them. Lots of room for arguments.

From 1969 on, full contact allowed, as long as it was not a pause, as in a continental.
