Liao Hui CNTV Out of the Shadows

September 2, 2013 By Gregor Winter

Here is a bit about Liao Hui from a CNTV video segment titled “Out of the Shadows”

If you can help with the translation (you can skip the wait, I think the karaoke is the most important part where they finally reveal their secret 😀 this time for real!) it would be greatly appreciated.

Update: 250kg Paused Squat at 6:10 (thanks toplel)

Update #2: Translation Thanks to Fake Natty and Happy Chinese Boy.

The army salute, backflip, and angry roar, Liao Hui during the Beijing olympics, right when he began to surge, he had no opposition, no challengers. Using the Beijing gold as a starting point, Liao hui began his peak, continuing at 3 golds at the Snatch, C&J and total at the goyang weightlifting world champs, at the world champs in turkey, he broke the C&J and total records for the 69 class. Then after the competition, suddenly Liao Hui mysteriously disappeared.

His stomach sucks in so much because he does not eat2 years later, he once again stepped on the competition platform. He no longer had his yellow dyed hair, his baby fat, what did he go through these 2 years?

Then liao hui talks about his experience cutting weight. Had to hold on the handles as he walked up the steps, and his stomach was so flat and sucked in from not eating.

Liao hui talks about the testing. He says the result of a normal testing is revealed within 10-14 days, after the testing he broke the records. When he returned to Beijing he got a notification about his piss sample not passing the standard. The final results still didn’t come out weeks before the london olympics. He felt like he had no hope and chance of competing in the olympics, and he said he wanted to give up. He saw his teammates get on the bus and left.

He didn’t watch the London weightlifting champs for the 69 kg class, he was back in his home town. After the olympics he got news his ban was reduced from 4 to 2 years instead.

The commentator then jokes about how has anyone ever seen people as muscular as this drink tea? One of the favorite pastimes of weightlifters in China is to drink tea and sing karaoke. Liao hui says if he drinks tea he must have music as well.

[will leave the singing part for someone else to translate]

before the Chinese weightlifting competition, Liao Hui has been staying in the training center at the five fingered mountains in Hainan closed door training.

Liao Hui needs to lose weight before the competition, which he often has many complains for. He says how his stomach is “full” before the cutting, and after he cuts, his stomach sucks in so much because he does not eat. Sometimes he cannot sleep and has to sleep in a special position (points and turns his body) also needs to hold the handles when walking up stairs.

Then the video goes continues and shows Lu Xiaojun eating, saying how he is so tired from lifting he has no appetite. Liao Hui eats only two small pork ribs, one chopstick of noodles, and a few green beans for dinner.

March 25, Liao Hui finally returns to the platform [Chinese Nationals] after two year ban. This is the place he thinks about everyday day and every night.

Two years ago Liao Hui was banned and he thought about retiring. He said he cried a few times. 2 years later, the 26 year Liao Hui returns, and using this competition as his starting point, his goal is Rio 2016, when he will be 29. Liao Hui says he feels more relaxed and during competition he feels more at ease. He doesn’t want to talk too much, just wants to use his actions to prove him self. I, Liao hui, has returned.

the only thing that the lifters love more than tea is karoke.

after workouts they are so tired that they don’t have the energy/appetite to eat much food, hence why liao hui has like no food on his plate.

liao hui pushes him self to the max. he has to use the hand rail like an old man to get up the stairs after he lifts.

when he is cutting weight to compete he can not sleep on his back, he has to sleep on his side or else it is painful and difficult to breathe.

the two year ban he faced was very tough on him. he cried. he cried over
