Olympics Wrap Up

August 8, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Ok, so all the London 2012 Weightlifting events are over.

I will be updating the posts as soon as new material trickles in (Did you film videos? Let me know!)

Thanks to everybody for stopping by, posting comments and being hilarious in the chat.

Here is the chat after Lu Xiajun’s 175kg Snatch World Record.

Also, big thanks to the BBC commentators for providing endless material to rant about.

Non Evans deserves a special mention. As was pointed out in the chat:

Non Evans, mother of all weightlifting commentators,

holder of the deepest squat position,

definer of the difficulty of the front squat (much harder than the back squat, you must know).

Awards:

“Win Gold in 2 Weight Classes” Award: Ilya Ilyin.

“Balls of Steel” Award goes to Lu Haojie.

“Best World record in the Men’s 77kg” Award goes to Lu Xiajun.

“Best Korea” Award goes to Om Yun Chol.

“Made of German Steel” Award goes to Matthias Steiner (Matthias also gets the Best BTN Press Award).

“Best MSP”: Men’s 69kg

The “I Don’t Want to Age” Award goes to David Rigert.

“Best Coach” Award goes to the KAZ coach – Alexey Ni.

What were your favorite moments of the weightlifting events?

great coverage, thank you! p.s. a few minutes ago matthias steiner was in an interview on ARD and he said, there are no serious injuries, only some contusions and strains in the neck area.
also he said, training goes on and there are no reasons now to break up his carreer.

You are absolutely right that was a 3x bodyweight clean and jerk only two other men to my knowledge have done that.

I remember the announcer saying that 5 guys have done it so far…

        Edit: here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApbwH8PJN10&

Don’t know who they are though.

yeah did a google search and someone on bodybuilding.com actually listed like 7 people but some were not official. Genchez was never credited with 3x bodyweight since he tested positive at the contest he did it at. Neno apparently did a 3x bodyweight but it doesn’t make any sense because he randomly makes a10+kg jump in the same year at the 56kg class where he apparently did 171 but at worlds only did 162 according to http://www.chidlovski.net My guess was unofficial and he might have been at a heavier weight. stefan topurov hit a legit 180kg at 60kg though for silver at the 83 worlds so he is legit and the first to ever do it I believe from bulgaria no less.

The scariest moment was for sure http://i.imgur.com/TupEu.jpg I thought I was going to see the first death at the olympics

Best moment was lu haojie hitting that 190kg clean and jerk while clearly injured to secure silver.

I just watched a replay of it, and some of his rant is in english, shouting “Kazakhstan number 1!!!! Kazakhstan number 1!!!”. Hahah hilarious, one of my favourite coaches and the moment made a great .gif.

It’s at 1:23 of the full replay (at least on the CTV site).
