The Paleo Solution #86 with John Welbourn

June 28, 2011 By Gregor Winter

The Paleo Solution Podcast – Episode 86 features John Welbourn (from CrossFit Footbal) talking about lifting and training philosophies.

This was a great episode. I wish they would do more episodes like this and less of “Will eating this gram of grain cause celiac disease?” listener question episodes.

Topics include

  • John’s experience with Louie Simmons’ Westside Barbell Methods, the Conjugate System, training for powerlifting. deadlifting 700 pounds, bad knees
  • “The 21 year old in me is getting the 35 year old in trouble” – John Welbourn
  • distinction between people who want to workout and athletes
  • importance to have the necessary prerequisites (handle volume, training history, building of metabolic pathways) before you can start using special strength training methods
  • variety in training, Olympic Weightlifting vs Powerlifting, Bulgarian Method, Russian Method
  • specificity of Olympic Weightlifting
  • Coach Raphael  Ruiz (Welbourn credits the best of his NFL carear to his training) and his methods -choosing exercises that have a direct correlation to your sport, balance / gymnastics work, man resistance movements(get a partner to do eccentric / concentric movements against partner), isometric holds, stability work, and the diversity of his programming
  • learning to move athletically
  • learning from Dr. Nicholas Romanov
  • John helping to change the nutrition of some Westside lifters
  • attitude and maximizing potentiol
  • gaining weight – “Don’t run when you can walk, don’t stand when you can sit, don’t sit when you can lay down”
