Akkaev Wants to Lift in London

August 5, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Update: It’s official. No Akkaev in the 105kg.

This just in.

Khadzhimurat Akkaev wants to lift in London despit the doctors telling him not to.

Russia’s weighlifting gold medal favorite Khadzhimurat Akkaev is ready to risk his health to take part in the Olympic competitions just four days after having surgery, he told R-Sport on Sunday.

Akkaev said he refused to withdraw his entry despite doctors’ orders to refrain from exercise for six weeks.

“I still asked not to withdraw,” Akkaev said. “I still somehow can not leave it.”

“I worked hard, really. Even in such an unprepared condition, as I am now in, I might be enough to win. Somehow I have that hunch.

The question is, will they let him? I don’t know who has the last word in cases like this.

Now only Klokov needs to make a come back.

Thanks Dustin!

i don’t know if this is such a good move. That recovery time after a hernia operation is crucial.

he never had the surgery IMO, lots of pic of him walking around looking just fine, no pain or anything.

Even if he did, I still wouldnt be shocked if he lifted.

hes given his whole life to being olympic champion and this MIGHT be his last chance. gota go for it IMO.

I find it hard to believe that Russia would go to the extent of claiming he had emergency surgery in London when he didn’t, especially if someone with contacts in London could verify it.

If he wants to lift, so be it. But if he ends up paralysed he has no one else to blame but himself.

I saw him at the 94s watching the lifting and me and my brother took a photo with him. He looked fine, but lifting is not walking. He was wearing flip flops…if that can be taken as an indication of injury

Surgeries like this are pretty non invasive, plus this guy is no pussy. So walking shouldn’t be a problem.

I admire his courage and determination. While I wanted Dima to destroy him, I would rather the gold medal be kept in Russia at all cost.

Either he is really risking his health and will become a true champion or a tragic figure in the process OR if we keep on speculating that a deal was made, the deal was either remade or he passed his test after all.
If the deal was renegotiated somebody else might get busted.

I still want to believe that Aramnau, Akkaev, and Klokov will burst through the roof of the stadium, land on the platform, with fireworks, lasers, smoke machines, and rock music.

I want to believe it too.

Waiting for the Klokov action hero entry.
