ATG Roundtable – Share your Training

August 25, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Since I always like to see how different people approach their training I thought it might be a good idea to let you guys & girls share your training.

Blogs, YouTube channels, training logs, anything goes.

The aim is to make connections with like minded people and to learn from each others training.

Post your links in the comments. Provide  some information, so people get an idea what your training is about, like:

  • Your discipline
  • What program do you use?
  • What are your goals?
  • or whatever else your posts are about.

Looking forward to see who you are.

I am a weightlifter that aspires to lift on the international level someday. My training consists mostly of the snatch, clean & jerk, and some form of squatting but will do some other assistance stuff occasionally. My current bests are 118 snatch and 170 clean & jerk at 105.

      Good stuff Jake!

      Everyone, here is the 170kg C&J http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihjt_XKDLFA

      Also “Birthday Squats”- 315×24 … Ouch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gry97Muzo40

Thanks, Gregor. Hopefully I can get my snatch to stop sucking so bad so I can actually be relevant eventually.

Also, the birthday squats are a tradition that I have started at the high school that I coach at and the kids have all really gotten into them. Give them a shot on your birthday, everyone.

Your discipline: primarily powerlifting for the past year but in reality all types of human movement and strength development
What program do you use? Stronglifts 5×5 from 2009-2011 5/3/1 Boring But Big 2011-now
What are your goals? To be as strong as possible. To stay healthy, mobile, and agile.
Been following your site for about a year and enjoy what you’ve done. I’m in the preliminary planning stages of opening a warehouse based strength and conditioning facility similar to Matt Wichlinksi’s Strength Shop or Zach Even-Esh’s Underground Garage Gym.

      Nice lifts!

Man, opening your own gym… how awesome is that?

I think that’s a dream a lot of us have. Takes tons of heart to succeed with it.

I wish you best of luck with it.

I am a performance athlete (ie a human) that dabbles in every discipline – olympic, powerlifting, bodybuilding, etc. . Right now, due to lack of equipment and time, I am learning how to maintain (and even progress) my strength without a gym. Here’s Julys results: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COgYDvYiaro . I primarily just follow my body and do a lot of “grease the groove”. Chinups with a #20 vest for 20 reps is right around the corner. I talk big picture health & fitness stuff/ psychology at http://www.leviclampitt.com.

    • GregorATG says

      August 25, 2012 at 19:10

Definitely possible to progress without a gym.

Plus you have weights / weighted vest (and some awesome stairs to sprint). Have you tried mixing in some gymnastics exercises into your training? Would be a good fit for your situation.

I guess you could classify me as a crossfit athlete but I consider myself a military athlete with a strength obsession. I want to be able to do my job but I also want a 136kg snatch and a 160kg CJ. Still trying to find the perfect balance of conditioning and strength. Work interferes with my programming a lot, but I get it in when I can. Just hit 100kg snatch on Tuesday after being away from the barbell for about 2 weeks. That means I added 25 kilos to my snatch since March. I’d like to qualify for Americans next year as either a 105 or 94.

That’s some good progress! Congrats on that hundo snatch. Also 2:26 Fran is no joke either!

I train to complement my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training and gain strength and size, because you can never have too much strength. Thus, I try to stick to the basics and found the Juggernaut Method (JM) and Wendler’s 531 (Full Body) very helpful.

Right now I do only 2 lifts per session and I train every other day. I use the JM for the main lifts and the 531 scheme for some kind of variation of the main lift. Whenever I feel like doing things like chin ups, dumbbell press variations, row variations or even bicep curls, I just go for it:

Squat JM + Pendlay Row 531
Overhead Press JM + Deficit Deadlift (Snatch Grip) 531
Bench Press JM + Front Squat 531
    Deadlift JM + Dips 531

    • GregorATG says

      August 25, 2012 at 20:14

Interesting combination. I have not looked into JM before.

        August 25, 2012 at 22:15

He actually has this kind of mix in the book. I only tweaked it a little bit to match my small amount of equipment (“homegym”). The book is worth a look.

powerlifter drug free and raw. doug hepburn routine with singles. when i get stale on that i move to 8 sets of 2 build to 8 sets 0f 3. when i go stale on that its back to singles. squat bench and deadlift. and sit-ups pullups or bent-rows for assistance.3 sets for 8 adding weight gradually over time. i work 60 hours a week so i only workout 2 days a week.

    • GregorATG says

      August 26, 2012 at 10:00

Great to hear you get everything done despite the 60 hours a week. I had discussions with people working barely 40 a week and complaining about not having time.

It’s all a question of how bad do you want it.

At 32, I competed at the European CrossFit Regionals this year, finished 20th with a torn bicep. I love my barbell so I’m turning into a, very frustrated, oly lifter. Currently at 100/135 at 85kg. Just finished planning my next 14 weeks of training using some Catalyst Athletics/Glen Pendlay templates…and Chinese lifters program posted on here!

Oh I assumed most of you knew that I am still on 531.

531 for the big movements together with bodybuilding style training & bodyweight exercises for assistance.

Goals: grow some legs, weigh 80kg by the end of this year!

Tragic lifting fan, recently bought my own house do now I have a home gym to do whatever I want! Currently that is equal parts ChaosnPain and brooks kubik. I’m not gifted at the standard lifts so I work hard at some odd ones! Recent PR was two dumbell clean and press with 100lb thick handle bells. Love your site Gregor !

37 year old Swede. Weightlifter since 2-3 years. Just broke the 100kg snatch barrier. I am really limited by my weak ass legs. So I tend to focus on programs with squatting emphasis.

Goal is to beat the women -48kg world record 🙂

Ha nice! with a 100kg snatch you already have the 48kg WR!

Now you “only” need a 122kg Clean & Jerk 🙂

        August 27, 2012 at 12:35

Shouldn´t be impossible right 🙂 After that I will be aiming for the next weightclass.

90kg PLer and aspiring 85kg Oly lifter. Best PL competition lifts (raw and no wraps) of 273kg squat, 182kg bench, and 280kg DL at 89kg bodyweight. Now I’m around 86kg lbs and working to become an Oly lifter. Best lifts so far in training are 130kg snatch and 155kg C&J. Only been O lifting for a few months, but things are going ok for not having a coach to teach me the lifts. Self-taught from Youtube all the way! haha

I train using the “whatever the hell I want” method, but mainly influenced by Bulgarian system. Shitloads of doubles and singles, with the occasional set of 3 or 5 for fun. Did this even with PL and had good results, and it seems to work ok with OL as well (for now). Hoping to do an OL contest sometime in the next year, but we’ll see.

Also, that 405 lb bottom position front squat on here from a while back was me. My best regular FS is 465 lbs (211kg)…so yeah, you can tell I suck at O lifting technique right now.

These are some good numbers! 130/ 155 self taught… respect!

Also lifting on what looks like your front porch looks like an awesome spot.

PS: Everyone, here is the mentioned Dead Front Squat gtg009 mentioned https://allthingsgym.com/2012/06/dead-squats/
