Bad Purchases You Made – Here is one of mine

November 4, 2012 By Gregor Winter

I don’t think that I shared this with you yet.

Here is one of my bad purchases.

It was 2 AM. I was surfing ebay for equipment and found these 2 bumper plates.

80 Euros for 2 TKCHIN 25kg Bumper Plates, labled “for 50mm Olympic bars” …

Their auctions were only running for a couple more minutes. I was tired. So I bought them.

Here they are, living their lonely existence in my home gym.

25kg TKCHIN bumper plates

So when they arrived I was like “WTF is that?”

What’s wrong with them? Non standard, 43cm diameter … and what’s more …

It is a 70mm hole!

See for yourself:

The seller did not lie. 50mm barbell fits in there without problem.

Please tell me I made an awesome purchase and these are very rare, antique and valuable plates that were used at some historic competition, back when Napoleon ruled France.

If you know something about this company or when & why 70mm holes where made, let me know.

What are your bad gym related purchases?

You could try getting some sort of bush or adapter made up. Shouldn’t be too difficult. At least then you could use them 🙂

That’s what I thought too, but I don’t have the tools to make one.

Right now I use them by sandwiching them really tight between 2 other plates. That lets me at least deadlift with them.

Are you sure they are 25kg? They might have been modded to fit a fat axel or something like that.
I have 4 plates that were originally for those puny 10mm bars, but we a CNC milling machine to make the holes 50mm. They ended up weighing about 19.5kg

You are right. Just weighed them 18.4kg each :/

That feeling when you lose 13kg on your deadlift :(. You could try some zinc oxide tape misha style or some electrical tape to the bar to try to add some extra girth.

I tried this and found it quite painful.

I’m sorry you got duped, but that was really funny. I’m sure you’ll find a use for them. Hell, you can chuck them like strongmen chuck kegs or something.

I’d be interested to see what bar will properly fit those TKCHIN you have haha. Also I’m interested in seeing your home gym!

I think the worst purchase in general is something that you buy and never use.

For me it’s a free standing punching bag (Body Opponent Bag) I bought used for $200. Never use it! Every time I hit it, it moves, and it doesn’t feel the same as hitting a heavy bag. I have since put a Klingon mask over it’s head (some pics here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152172506505052.913791.534475051&type=1&l=f9feb1bdba) and use it as a belt holder.

Also have a medicine ball that I never use. Waste of money.

Haha great use for the mask. Also, now that you said it, I have not used in ages. When I did it was for doing plyometric push ups.

Probably modified for some strong man equipment like an axle or something?

Even axles are 50mm; they can take standard plates

This is why girth is more important than length 😉

You could get some 50mm PVC pipe, cut the length the same width as the plates and centre it in the hole, then fill the gap with something like epoxy. You shouldn’t need any tools really. Just an idea.

    Time to build a sled.
