Boyanka Kostova 180kg & 190kg Front Squat

Meanwhile in Azerbaijan / at the 2015 World Championships in Houston…

Boyanka Kostova front squats 190kg, she’s known for her squatting strength and recently had a jaw dropping performance at the European Championships.

Update 05.02.2016: Another 180kg Front Squat Boyanka did in the Houston training hall.

She also snatched 110kg and clean and jerked 135kg right before this (videos later). She did this exact workout two times before competing in Houston where she broke the Snatch and Total World Record.

    Can someone explain to me how she can do 190kg on the front squat and “only” C+J 140 (for a WR)? Although I will note that she made that 140 C+J look easy.

      It is a good question. Front squatting 190 kg at 58 kg is a real feat. A C&J of 140 kg is also nothing to sneeze at, but one would think a technically competent weightlifter like Boyanka should be able to jerk a higher precentage of her front squat.than 74%. Given her squatting numbers, she should be good for another 10 kg, maybe even 20 kg on the C&J. Of course, she did life the 140 kg with supreme ease, so maybe she can hit 150+ kg in the C&J.

      Her power jerk is holding her back. Not related to squatting strength as much as a clean, plus she does (or can) not go deep in the receiving position. It is clearly the part of the lift where she is lacking world class technique.

        You are right. Her receiving position is really quite shallow. I’d be curious to know why she prefers a squat/power jerk over a split jerk..
