Ilya Ilyin Becoming a 105kg Lifter?

August 10, 2012 By Gregor Winter

So according to this article Ilya is planning to move up in weight and become a 105kg lifter.

Yerzhas Boltayev, the weightlifter’s coach, said this during the briefing that was held at the airport.

And because he wants to read All Things Gym he is

going to learn English in the next six month. “I am going to study; I feel that I need knowledge and skills. I’d like to learn English. I will devote my time to English in the nearest half a year,”

Good choice Ilya! Furthermore he also has other plans for the long term future.

He said that he was not going to quit weightlifting. Ilyin is going to do a Masters Degree in Sports. “I am going to become a coach. It is interesting to work with professional athletes. I think that if I qualify as a coach, it will be a huge success both for me and for Kazakhstan sport,” the athlete said.

Don’t know for when he plans this, but in the videos posted earlier he said that his souls tells him to lift in Rio 2016.

Thanks to Rob for submitting this news.

Update: Kazakh news piece confirming it. Thanks to Soiren and Max for translating.

A place of the first number in 94 kg category is now vacant. The first applicants on this place are Vladimir Sedov and Almaz Uteshov, who will go to WWC in Poland.

      Oh yeah!

It will be also interesting to see how his snatch develops.

Would he be moving up because he wants to set new records in 105 and win a medal in that category? What an amazing lifter!

there is something about this guy, like he has this swagger not a cocky attitude but comes across i don’t know how to describe it, but you gotta love the guy. my bet is he moves as a challenge to himself and he’s got nothing to lose but everything to gain. i can see him wining the 105s, 200/240 no problem. i think only person that can challenge those numbers as a true 105 is armanu hopefullly he gets healthy and decides to comepete in rio.

Aye I think 440kg would be a good total, maybe we could expect higher? 11kg is a big weight jump! Like Gregor was saying would be really interesting to see how the snatch responds to that. 233kg was almost easy, but I think he is very good at pulling out perfect lifts that look easy, but was quite an effort, just by moving as quickly as he can to catch the bar. Time will tell, will make the comps more exciting thats for sure if Artem Ivanov (correct name??) gets back to health and does well in 94s and Ilya takes the 105

All hail the weightlifting Gods. Our prayers have been answered.

If he wins Rio he will surpass Dimas in legendary status. Especially if he wins it in the 105s.

well dimas had 3 golds and a bronze, ilya would only have 3 golds if he wins rio, which he most likely will

Well he is completely unchallenged at 94kg thats for sure. The 105kg division has some ridiculous talent and historically is one of the hardest weight divisions to dominate. Him going up would be good and bad, I mean we all saw how easy he was lifting at the olympics they year. He could have easily hit 190kg on the snatch and like 240 on the clean and jerk by the looks of it. I would like him to go up to make the 105kg division even more interesting then it already is though and he would be the first lifter to win in two divisions + possibly hold world records in two divisions.

[deleted]? 94kg was the best weightclass of all. plenty of strong competitors, the silver medalist just totalled 3kg less than the previous wr and two other men snatched the same weight as ilya. he was not unchallenged by any means. the only weightclasses where the winners were unchallenged were 69 and 77, and possibly 105+.

Well he did beat the next best guy by about 10kg and he had a lot left in the tank. I agree the 77kg champion was the biggest difference but I think that was due to the number two guy getting injured in the snatch portion. As well as the former olympic champion injuring himself also. Ruslan had a good chance to get gold I feel behdad was not in perfect form anyways so he was far from unchallenged also steiner injured himself also.Illya was 5kg off the 105kg world record in the 94kg class he could have easily broke the wr on the 105kg this olympics. Either way I think illya is the most talented lifter we have right now and him moving up would be something.

He could not have done 190 easily, because if you look closely, he catches the bar very low with no room to spare: 1cm less height and he may not have got it. It looks easy because he catches it perfectly with great balance and stands right up with it. Alexander Ivanov’s last attempt at 185 looked easier than Ilin’s, but still he had missed it in his second. Looks can be deceptive: with Ilin’s technique, even max efforts lift will look easy. That is the technique of a champion.

I read on his Facebook once that he trains at around 99kg, which I believe is on the heavier side for a 94kg, considering he has to cut over 5kg. I too think this means the 105kg record is going to fall.

      August 11, 2012 at 19:20

That is what I read also. You want to keep your weight within 5kg of your competition weight.

But yeah, bye bye C&J record.

He is certainly one of the most likable people to ever grace the platform. If he does move up, Zakharevich’s ridiculous numbers are most certainly in danger.

Zak’s snatch is most likely untouched, but I sense 250 with Ilin is possible. In the Olympics he could’ve done 235 + based on the smoothness of the 233.

She says that now that Ilya Ilin lifts in the 105kg category there is a vacancy in the 94kg category and the competition for the place in the 94 cat is going to be between Vlaimir Sedov and Almaz Uteshov.
Edit: damn it, I’m slow 😀
