WTF! I know this comment is not in the right place but, Gregor, man, you have to make a post about one of the most stupid decisions ever made in sports history: the IOC dropping out wrestling from the 2020 olympic program. I just found out this (today), and I’m shocked. Really shocked.

Don’t worry brah, plenty of golf to watch instead (not srs).

One of the many stupid decisions by the IOC.

On the other hand I never watched wrestling (and I guess many people never did). But then I never watched most of the other “sports” that are in the Olympics.

As for reasons I heard them mentioning the lack of a believable anti doping program… I wonder which sport is next 😉

AFAIK weightlifting is the only sport in the Olympics in which every competitor is tested during comp, not just “random” testing 1/3rd of the pool.

I don’t think that’s true. All medalists at the olympics are tested, in every sport. But I don’t think weightlifting gets more tests, archery has the highest positive rate.

That’s what I heard too. All medalists, but not all athletes in WL.

5.7 Selection of Athletes to be Tested

5.7.1 At International Events, IWF shall determine the number of
finishing placement tests, random tests and target tests to be
            performed.

The following Athletes shall at least be tested for each Competition at
            an International Event.

5.7.1.1 Each Athlete finishing in one of the top three
placements in the Competition, plus at least one other Athlete in
            the Competition selected at random.

5.7.1.2 Any Athlete that establishes or breaks a world record.

5.7.2 At National Events, each National Federation shall determine the number of Athletes selected for Testing in each Competition and the procedures for selecting the Athletes for Testing.

5.7.3 In addition to the selection procedures set forth in Articles 5.7.1 and 5.7.2 above, IWF at International Events, and the National

Federation at National Events, may also select Athletes or teams for Target Testing so long as such Target Testing is not used for any purpose other than legitimate Doping Control purposes.

5.7.4 Athletes shall be selected for Out-of-Competition Testing by the
IWF and by National Federations through a process that substantially
complies with the International Standard for Testing in force at the time of selection.

Agreed. This is an absolutely atrocious decision, disgraceful even. Wrestling is one of the most foundational sports of the Olympics. Only track and field perhaps beats its. I suspect the real reason has mainly to do with the international wrestling federation’s failure to lobby aggressively; i.e. they did not bribe sufficiently. Or maybe the IOC wanted to send a message to all the sports: all yous had better start ponying up the money. If we did it to wrestling, we can do it to you.
