Siamand Rahman 301kg Bench Press London 2012 Paralympics Powerlifting

September 7, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Update: In December 2012 he did 305kg in training.

Here are Siamand Rahmam’s lifts from the Men’s +100kg Powerlifting at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Easy 270kg & 280kg Bench Press to secure gold. No problem here.

But his world record attempt at 301kg was red lighted.

If you know why, let me know in the comments.

Update: So the consensus seems to be that it was the uneven lock out.

From the official rule book (PDF):

13.7 Disqualification

h) Any uneven extension of both arms during the final ‘lock out’ stage.

Thanks to Sascha for submitting the video.

Luckily I downloaded the video in HD before.
As for the failed attempt, I guess it was redlighted because of uneven arm extension.

Can you try to upload it again?

Or make the file available for download somewhere?

you should know , Paralympic Powerlifting rules are the most strictly of all bench press competitions . Including straight line ON the Bench , simulltanusly tack of 2 elbows – very light touch on the chest , 1 sec and more of relaxing the bar (weight) on the chest and then , lock the elbows simulltanusly with out any move left or right .. Very stricly rules do this sport so competative -totally raw .. they don’t allow anything : straps for elbows straps for hands with hard tight .. And remember those people don’t feel anything below their chest cose of paraplegic . remember that able body powerlifters lift the weight with driling and DRIVE with their legs .

Thanks. I just dug up the official rule book and skimmed through it.

I would like to see this at every PL competition.

i’d say that if rules like this taken place to the able bodied athletes , you will see the that they will had to decries around 12% to 15% for light weight classes and 18% to 20% for heavier classes of their maximum in order to do a ” GOOOD LIFT ” (like IPC P.L.)
I’m Paralympic Powerlifter too and i can see the diference when i try to a normal typical bench and then , when i’m working out to the Oficial Paralympic Bench i can see the dif.

Thanks for the input. Did you compete at this years Paralympics?

I would be ok with seeing lower numbers. I enjoy lifts like that much more than than the bastardized versions with barely and range of motion.

No, Unfortunately i wasn’t qualified , so much competition (which is good) i’ll be in the European Championships for sure and some international tournaments maybe ” Faza ” in Dubai , Then i believe i will be in the World Championships and some more internationals and nationals so to be ready for Rio 2016 – this is my target . I’m working out very hard and my training is 5 days with 3 double works out (8 full time trainings / week).
I agree the federation must clean the sport and re arrange the rules of the sport . Right now there are not many people with good technick on bench press and the blame is on their federation letting them do anything they want on the bench and take it as a good lift .
I ‘ ve been reading your articles for some monthes and i can say that many of them helped me a lot !

Looking forward to seeing you compete. I hope there will be coverage online.

Wow, they don’t even get a liftoff. That’s insane weight to unrack then bench. I know for a fact my bench max is lower when I unrack myself.

that is up to the athlete , He or She Decide if gets a liftoff or not . I prefer to get a liftoff but only 5% (more or less) of the total weight and not much more than this. You have to feel the weight before you start the execution of the exersise
