JoAnn Aita World Record Total at the Backyard Meet

November 7, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Backyard Meet addendum.

Thanks to Mike for submitting this. He wrote:

Of all the big names and impressive heavy hitters there, only one person set a world record … JoAnn.

At 51kg (113 lbs) bodyweight she did

  • 140 kg (308 lbs) squat
  • 75 kg  (165 lbs) bench press
  • 170 kg (374 lbs) sumo deadlift

385kg for a World Record in the total.

I first didn’t want to post it because I don’t like sumo pulls, but since I posted Aleksey Nikulin’s Total where he also lifts sumo, I thought why not.

Do you like sumo stance deadlifts?

I like Sumo. After having 90% of my left meniscus removed, i find conventional DL gives me some knee pain for a couple of days, while sumo does not. I still do conventional, and I am probably stronger conventional, but the majority of my pulls are sumo.

Awesomely done by Aita! She will probably keep breaking that record a couple of more times!

I hate sumos! I grew up in a lift for athletics crowd. I don’t know any sport that requires an athletic position that starts with your feet way out side your body like a sumo DL.

That being said does not mean I don’t appreciate a triple+ BW DL when I see one no matter what way it gets up!!

    Great job!!

I agree, just like super wide stance squats… they look not as nice as the conventional lifts.

Who cares about the Sumo part…how about the world record part? Wow. Those are impressive numbers!! Yes, Sumo is legit. 🙂

Seriously?? You guys are going to pick this performance apart because you personally don’t prefer her deadlift stance (which, by the way is legal and used in every federation)?? Get a hobby, then learn to appreciate how incredible this performance was. World records don’t happen every day, and this one was earned.

      Who picked her performance apart?

I just stated that I don’t like to watch sumo deadlifts.

      Way to overreact.

Do you commonly post videos of world records to use as a jumping off point to discuss your technical preferences…?

If I would do that it would still be perfectly fine, since it’s my site.

In the future try to add value to the discussion and keep the “Get a hobby” BS to yourself.

Thanks, Gregor, for posting this video! I like sumo cuz it got me to break a world record total! ; ) I actually train almost exclusively conventional, but I pull sumo at meets. I pull the same weight either style, but I pick sumo for meets because I usually don’t round on heavy sumo, like I sometimes do on heavy conventional. I recover faster from heavy sumo, which is nice for getting back to training after meets.

      Thanks for stopping by JoAnn.

      > I pull the same weight either style

That is awesome. Also your reasons make a lot of sense.

Hope this wasn’t the last WR we see from you 🙂 and good luck at the American WL open.

For me, the most impressive of Jo Ann’s 3 lifts is the squat. I don’t know anyone her size who comes close to that, and it’s as pretty as you’ll see. She and Max and their crew train hard.
