Regarding topic 1:
During his time in the NFL John used to do overhead pressing variations (seated DB press, seated incline DB press) 3 times per week, to increase his bench press. Once again it shows just how important overhead presses are to become a well rounded athlete.
To balance this, he also used the classic 3:1 pull to press ratio. For every one frontal plane press, he pulled for three reps or added up the tonnage pressed and tried to at least double or triple that amount with pulling movements.
