Lasha Talakhadze 215kg Snatch + 258kg Clean and Jerk 2016 Olympic Games

January 20, 2017 By Gregor Winter

22 year old Lasha Talakhadze wins Gold in Rio!

215kg Snatch + 258kg Clean and Jerk for a New World Record Total of 473kg!

And all this despite of the Iranian crowd that kept booing after Behdad Salimi bombed. Lasha handled that like a boss.

Update 20.01.2017: Lasha’s 205, 210, 215kg Snatches in side by side slowmo comparison.

Update: Iranians are spamming the IWF instagram hard. Literally every post.

Even multiple death threats against specific IWF jury members have been posted! Here is just one of them.

They also hacked iwf.net.

105plus-results

@talaxadzelasha aka The Georgian Giant (105kg+, @hookgripgeo) snatching 215kg/474lb to set a new world record. This was broken on the next lift but he went on to C&J 258kg/569lb which set a new World Record in the total with 473kg — thus laying claim to be the strongest man alive (at least since the 80s — the highest total in history is 475kg or 2kg higher). Overall he showed himself to be the best of a very strong field and he proved that his 2015 World title was no fluke. Look for him to dominate international weightlifting in the supers for years to come as he's still just 22 years old!

Loved that! Loved to being there when history was made. 473!!! Lasha really is the boss. Salimi’s cnj was a no lift in my opinion also, even if they had not reversed the call he had no chance for gold. Any respect I had for iranian “fans” is lost, probably forever. They have amazing lifters and I still will cheer for them, because unlike these “fans” that were in the audience today, I understand that lifters have nothing to do with some of their fans behavior. Except maybe Salimi today, he went pretty far, maybe too far, not sure how much could you see on tv. I expect hard consequencies. If Russia got banned from OG, I wanna see Iran feel the justified wrath of IWF too! No bias here, Rostami is one of my favorites, I really wanted Salimi to make the 3rd attempt (although it was clear he simply was not strong enough today to even think of hanging with Talakhadze), but what the Iranians did in the hall was nothing short of disgusting. Lasha was not to be influenced, but Aleksanyan probably was.

You are right, I am in no position to judge them, but IWF is. Even if you are unsatisfied by the refereeing, this is not the way to go about it. I am not only speaking for myself (we had no lifter in the A group so I just wanted to enjoy the show), but the most of the hall was the same opinion, whether cheering for Reis, or both Georgians or Armenians, or simply for a fair competition. I talked to a unnamed coach after the competition from another nation (not influenced by the booing of Iranians) and he also expressed the sentiment that finally someone (meaning jury at this particular session) wasn’t afraid to put the foot down by making a call against Iran and deeming the no lift a no lift, although they had to be well aware of what will come after such decision. So again, this is not just my opinion (also very much is), but this is how felt a lot of people today there.
And obviously, you can have your opinion about the 2nd clean and jerk, I have mine, but bottom line is there are people qualified to make a decision, and they did. And the anger of Iranian fans towards Lasha or even Aleksanyan… simply ridiculous!

I was pissed about Li Yajun’s first CJ attempt. 2 reds and 1 white, and I saw Roble’s for the women’s 75kg+ last CJ attempt that pretty much looked like Salimi’s 2nd attempt too. I missed Salimi’s first attempt but 2nd was definitely a press-out. Overall, I felt the judges have been inconsistent.

Robles’ should not have counted. She is the least impressive lifter in Rio. Barely clean and jerking above her bodyweight.

There is no debate here. Both his jerks were presses and shouldn’t have stood. I like Salimi but last night he disgraced himself and his country with his conduct. As for the fans on the stands they behaved like 3 yr olds that throw their toys out of the pram when mommy doesn’t show them love. I would expect a heavy sanction on Salimi and the Iranian coaching stuff and rightly so. It would be scandalous not to.

I also noticed a slight press-out in the 2nd c&J the Judges were strict but not incorrect. However, they should be this strict with other lifts. It must have been horrible for Salimi to get 3 white lights which then get overuled later. However, in my opinion does not give the fans to behave like this. If they would have just booed when the lift was overruled it would still have been somewhat understandable as it was a slight press-out which is hard to notice, but to boo during the lifts of other lfiters is completely disrespectful. Surely not all the Iranian fans are like that, but the fans that were booing should be banned to visit weightlifting competions for several years if it was up to me.

Hands down Talakhadze was the best overall lifter there.
Salimi did not do so well at last meet in Tehran, 235 CJ. Iran coach should have started him at lower weight, maybe 235 and secure a medal. I see their point of starting at higher weight. They could have picked 243 kg same as Talakhadze. Salimi had a kilo advantage at that point.

I really thought 460 for total is needed for bronze. I was wrong.

    • logicalfellac says

      August 17, 2016 at 11:26

I agree with this assessment. Not a good attempt selection by the coaching staff when Salimi isn’t in the best form. I recon 245 is the weight he usually starts out with when he is in full health.
Here’s hoping that he recovers fully and we see a real showdown in the near future with the two Russians in the mix as well.

    • PersianPT says

      August 17, 2016 at 16:37

Salimi was still injured, if you watch the video of the last meet in Tehran the 235kg was not really a clean and jerk, he power cleaned 235kg it which is a huge weight to power clean. His torn ACL and damage to the knee is not healed fully. He should be back in another year and then we should really see his true potential. The coaches should not of take him to the olympics really the psychological damage by not performing is quite hard for an athlete to overcome. Unfortunately Iranian coaching decision over the last 2 years has been very questionable, this lead to molai injury in the first place and now to behdad being humiliated. This is why Rostami chooses to train alone without a coach. There needs to be a coaching upheaval in iran. I just saw sohrab moradi destroyed two free chances by making miss lifts, behadad did a similar thing at the last olympics. I have never seen such behaviour from other countries coaching, an athlete would die for two free lifts to break olympic record. Sohrab melted mentally and flopped, he had a chance to break the world record and clearly had the potential too, some really bad coaching decision, really bad. Iranian powerlifter siamand rahman, has been waiting 3 years to break the 300kg record at the Olympics on the recommendation of his coaches, he reported in a interview his coaching staff have told him to break the 300kg record at the olympic and not at the world IPC meets for the prestige because its such a big event. Its absolutely ridiculous coaching decisions.

As per my post I am ashamed of their behaviour. No excuse but to put things into context their has been quite some controversy with the judging in the wrestling (greco-roman) which is Iran’s second best hope for medals. I suspect many people are pissed off and taking their anger out whenever they percieve further injustices.

I too was pleased to see Salimi congratulating Talakhadze. We (Iranians) typically like to see our sportsman take victory and defeat with good grace. So the behaviour of the so-called fans is embarassing.

I only hope IWF does not ban us 🙁

I am from Iran and was disappointed with the reaction of the Iranian fans in the audience. Their behaviour and unsportsmanlike conduct reflects badly on all of us.

I think the Iranian coaches should have come in at a lower weight to at least secure a medal (or attempt to).

In Behdad’s defence his ACL followed by a further injury as illustrated by the youtube link I’ve attached hindered his C+J which meant that he had to change his technique.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeQ–soa-aw

When all is said and done I doubt Behadad would have beaten Talakhadze in the form he was in. Tremendous performance and a well deserved gold!

PS. I only hope for the sake of the sport that this time round Talakhadze was clean (I realise this sentiment is not always reflected by all who follow this “sport”).

    • PersianPT says

VERY UNLIKELY religion had absolutely nothing to do with their bad behaviour, they were just shocked that their champion was eliminated unfairly to them. Iran has a large population of Armenian Christians with their own churches, there are over 600 churches in Iran.

  16. PersianPT says

    August 17, 2016 at 16:15

As a Iranian myself, the reaction of the Iranian fans towards other weightlifting competitors was unacceptable and really uncharacteristic of Iranian generally, its not fair to judge all iranian fans by these few morons. Some of the decision in other sports that Iran has been good at has been despicable, specially wrestling, it would seem someone did not want Iran to dominate those events like it has been doing over the last few years and there is no denying this. Sports has too much politics involved in it, Just look at the recent treatment of Russians. Everybody in the Olympics is using steroids or performance enhancing compounds in one way or another. But lets not get into that discussions. An still unrecovered Salimi managed to take snatched world record and he should be back stronger in a years time, its clear he needed more time for recovery. He seriously injured himself with a 262kg in training and underwent surgery but he should be back much better and stronger in a year or two then this fight should really take off. There is no doubt there is some really good competitors to salimi but from all that I have seen Salimi has the biggest potential of all the current major heavyweight powerlifter but unfortunately he has suffered from the HUGE mismanagement of the weightlifting committee and lack of money due to sanctions in iran and also some bad luck with injuries. Although tough, iran will retain its heavyweight record for the foreseeable future given all things are optimal, salimi has lots left in the tank.

  17. GHM says

    August 17, 2016 at 16:56

Just a tangent to the above great discussion (yes I appreciate difference of opinions that is how things get better IMO), It is is 21st century. We have instant replays from four different angles. Why can’t the 5 person Jury have access to this technology?
This was brought up by BBC & NBC lady commentator/analyzer. Let’s do it IWF.

In addition, I was under impression that only Two to One (2 good – one red) lifts goes to jury.

    • disqus_PLQPJwJXMf says

      August 17, 2016 at 21:52

At best the referring has been inconsistent.

Efremov’s second C+J was 2 red 1 white for what was deemed to be a very marginal pressout of his right arm.

Salimi gets 3 white but gets referred to the jury.

But to top it off Robles third lift was no different to Salimi’s … no referral.

Now some may say that this is sour grapes … and if you wish to accuse me of that then I’ll take it on the chin with a smile on my face.

But I agree there is the technology and it should be implemented. We can clearly not rely on the 3 judges alone anymore.

See you all at the next world championships … hopefully lessons can be learnt but I’m not holding my breath.

    • Andreas says

      August 17, 2016 at 22:14

The jury judge all lifts, 3 whites, 2-1, 1-2 and 3 reds, and can overturn all of them.

The jury will only intervene when there is majority decision among the jury in opposition with the referees.

However, only when all jury members are in agreement will a lift be overturned (once an intervention occurs, they will discuss amongst themselves and can choose to do nothing if they are not all in agreement).

But here is a video of ailhosseini dong 260kg from many years ago, there is no doubt that if he was not banned for 12 years he would of had nearly all world records, his potential was unmatched even by salimi.
