Rumor: 2018 World Championships in Kazakhstan? Not True! IWF Confirmed Turkmenistan

March 15, 2018 By Gregor Winter

Update 17.03.2018: aaand that’s just what it was, a rumor…

Today IWF confirmed the dates for the 2018 World Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan! (via)

But as we have seen with this years Europeans, things can move until the very last minute. So don’t book your flights yet (although I heard that TKM paid quite a lot of money to host…).

(Original post from 15.03.2018 below.)

According to Kazakh news sites the 2018 world weightlifting championships are going to be moved from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan to Kazakhstan! (via)

Ilya Ilyin and Zulfiya Chinshanlo are expected to return to the platform (via).

For now, there has not been an official statement by the IWF.

Recently an IWF Intercontinental Commission met in Astana (via).

As participants pointed out, the meeting chaired by IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján provided a unique opportunity and was fruitfully used to discuss issues of common interest, get updates from the IWF on items of particular concern to the Continental Federations. Unity, as key to progress and reinforcing the status of weightlifting on a global scale, was emphasized and, in general opinion, clearly manifest at the meeting.

If this rumor turns out to be true, this meeting was indeed fruitful 🙂

in the last paragraphs Ni talks about the category changes. he has no insider news, but can imagine something like 94 will go 97 and 105 to 110. and that in this scenario (assuming they’re also Olympic classes) Ilyin would go 97 and Zaichikov 110 (because of height).

Are there changes to the weight classes coming? This is news to me.

Have you been in hibernation? 🙂

There will be 10 new weight classes for men and women, to be announced in ~June.

10 new weight classes? I didn’t know about that.

    My assumption

    64
    74
    85
    96
    108
    120
    +120

    Or something close.

    56kg to be deleted.

I’d rather think 56 kg would be kept – probably strong opposition against scraping it in Asia – and the gaps between weight classes would be stretched. Something like:
      56 – 64 – 73 – 84 – 97 -111 – +111.
