David Bedzhanyan 241kg Clean & Jerk 2014 Russian Championships

August 23, 2014 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Russia .. at the 2014 Russian National Championships.

I was making jokes about this before the competition started, so it’s even more awesome to see it become reality.

David Bedzhanyan Clean & Jerked 241kg at 105kg.

He went 228, 232 and then set the hall on fire with the 241kg.

Update: Read David’s Interview on ATG.

This is a new Russian Record (it does not count as an official world record). In the Snatch he got 185kg.

In addition it surely is the biggest Power Jerk (in competition) on video.

More from David:

  • 240kg Clean & Jerk from the 2011 Russian Champs
  • his official 238kg World Record Clean & Jerk
  • all David Bedzhanyan posts on ATG

More videos from the competition here.

He is officially one of the greats for me.The past two years were so weak 105 kg wise in Russia. That’s the truth. Demanov was a disappointment, everybody else was weak or too young to be there. But now Benzi is back!!! 😀

That’s a bit premature. As we have all seen, these 240 jerks turn into 230 once he leaves the country.

185+241 wont be enough to beat Ilya or Nurudinov anyway.

That’s not 100%. Ilya made 185+239 at home without making weight but Nurudinov went 190+235 international so from this, it actually looks like Nurudinov is the best (425 out of his country + made weight), Bedzhanyan is second (426 at home + made weight) and Ilya is worst, (424 at home + didn’t make weight). Of course, Ilya is improving quickly. I’m an Ilya Illin fan too but my point is, let’s not get carried away and make him out to be invincible and laugh at the suggestion that someone could challenge or beat him.

            good points.
its too bad akkaev can’t lift and klokov don’t want to. if they were roughly in the shape of the wwc 2011 they would definitively go for the title.
their total is still somewhat away from ilyin, bedzhanjan and even nurudinov.

You said it, I’m still trying to get over the London disappointment. Akkaev was good to get all world records and Klokov was good to made him do so *g* Let’s hope we get to see the great battle for the 105 title that we were promised before London. As of now, everybody who wants to win needs to go all out. This should be great entertainment.

no doubt…Akkaev looked good for 200/240

Bedzhanyan actually snatched 190 at home a few years back. Same place where he CJ’d 240.

Dayum, I had no idea he is this (relatively) young, wont be 26 until december. Good showing. It is pretty pointless for me to say I know, but as everyone I am so looking forward to november!

      not an international competition

akkaev and klokov says that he is not a talent lifter. imagine if he was.

Neither of them managed more than 235 kg in competition. Benzanjan is not a big snatcher but he can beat then with this 241 kg c&j 🙂

        August 24, 2014 at 19:13

I guess he’s just not fast enough to be a good snatcher? His raw strength is amazing. He must squat 800lbs!

        • Magneto says

          August 24, 2014 at 21:26

I’m trying to figure that out but I have no clue. His strength is without a doubt amazing and his speed under the bar is quite good. Pulling height doesn’t seem to be the problem either, judging by how high the 241 went up (compare max bar height and bottom squat height to Ilyins 241 c&j). That being said I think he could have snatched more than 185 if we look at bar height alone. Some good centimeters left there. Pfff .. no detrimental body structure either … it’s a miracle for me. Can somebody solve this or knows what Bedzhanyan is saying about that?

        August 25, 2014 at 10:01

Yes, he sure can judging by competition results. If he goes to the worlds and competes against Ilyin, Nurudinov and maybe an Aramnau in good shape, the clean and jerk battle could be something extraordinary. 🙂

I think he is taking very seriously his comeback. He looked in a very strong form. The last two years he was fading away and his place in the squad became unsure. I think he’s a much better lifter than Sheyko and Polovnikov. I don’t say he can beat Ilya but he can challenge him and that’s the important thing for us 🙂 Benzanjan can snatch 190 if he gets it right and Ilya won’t do anymore than that. I am almost sure that in the next few weeks Ilya will post a 195-245 training video – or thereabout – and I think he will be good for a 190-240 at the worlds. If Nurudinov will be in form these three are going to fight a real battle 🙂 I don’t see Aramnau coming around. At least not in the C&J. For me the two russian in the worlds team are : Sabanchiev and Benzanjan.

            August 26, 2014 at 13:53

I hope Aramnau will be back in good shape, he’s inspiring to watch. It can be a long shot, but the chance is there at least. Nurudinov we don’t hear or see much of, but I’m sure he will be ready for the worlds and on top of his game.

The 105 kg class will be interesting to watch if the top names all compete against each other. Especially in the clean and jerk great things can happen if they all battle it out. Nurudinov has made 235, Ilyin 233 in 94 kg, and now Bedzhanyan is closing in on the records of the old 100 kg class. If they push each other, and maybe throw in Aramnau in the mix, imagine the epic battle it could be in the clean and jerk.

Do you have evidence of them saying this? How could they call a world record holder an untalented lifter?

you can watch the interview that Klokov made with Akkaev,
