DIY Ring Training Dream Machine / Pulley System

September 13, 2011 By Gregor Winter

A gymnastics ring training pulley system (sometimes called Dream Machine , “50/50” or Ring Thing) is a nice and relatively cheap addition to your gym.

If you are reading this chances are you already know the benefits of something like that.

Namely, because of the pulley mechanism you only have to do half the work on ring strength elements.

This allows you to train elements you are not yet capable to do unsupported, like Iron Cross, Maltese, Planche and any of the cool stuff you see the pros doing.

Earlier this year I decided to build my own Dream Machine.

Looks like this

I just hang all this stuff with two carabiners from where my rings usually hang.

All the gear is climbing gear (pulleys, rope, carabiners) you can buy in outdoor / climbing shops. You could even use a climbing harness, but I got a gymnastics spotting belt (salto belt?) on ebay.

That belt allows me to do rotations and more transitions between ring strength elements.Anyway, here is a quick tutorial by Michael (a.k.a. Breaks) that shows you how to build a homemade rings dream machine a.k.a. pulley system a.k.a. 50/50.

Update: Breaks made some changes to his setup, new spotting belt etc…

Also check out his DIY Gymnastics Pommel Trainer / Mushroom Tutorial

And here is another video that show you what you can do with a Dream Machine

Is the belt called “lunge belt”?

What should be the length of the rope and minimum height of the bar you will hang it off of? Is 74 – 80 inches okay? Does that mean I should make each rope 8 feet long each, so it’s 4 feet in length when I attach it to the bar?

For the rope length I went with at least 2.5x Height of my ceiling for each. So I just bough 10m.

Great! What about a climbing harness with leg loops. Will it be more comfortable ?
