Old Time Ab Exercises

April 25, 2012 By Gregor Winter

… be thankful you’re even alive.

Over at the tight tan slacks of dezso ban you can see how people trained their abs back in 1940s.

And surprise, surprise… nothing much has changed since then. These exercises survived, because they are effective.

Leg raises, Dragon flags, Russian twists, barbell sit-ups, even GHD sit-ups it’s all been done long time ago.

Look at #10. I’ve never done those before. Dumbbell overhead bends / circles (a.k.a Saxon Side Bends).

Going to try these next training session.

I think #10 is a supposed to be a Saxon side bend, named for the great Arthur Saxon. Also commonly done with a barbell I remember reading somewhere that he could do it with 340 pounds or something crazy like that.

#10 looks pretty similar to what lu xiaojun was doing with a barbell in the video you posted a while back

Yep I was reminded of that one too.

But holding the Dumbbell / Barbell overhead is another beast.

I don’t think no 2 is a core exercise…it looks more like an accidentally-included personal snap (no pants)

Haha, same can be said to #4.
