Yung Chang 145kg Squat

December 2, 2014 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in China …

Update: Excellent detective work from Phil!

Correction: Both names are correct it seems. Zhang Rong or Yung Chang.

  • She’s 21 years old
  • In the 2013 Chinese National Games she didn’t complete one lift, bombed the Snatch, DNF (via)
  • At the 2014 Chinese Nationals she went 86, 90x,  90x in the Snatch and 103x, 103, 108x in the Clean and Jerk

Anyway, still a nice 145kg Squat.

Here she is at the 2013 Chinese National Games

Also, here at the 2014 Chinese Nationals (8m, 17m35s, 20m30s, 24m30s, 26m50s, 46m25s)

Still not 100% sure it is her in the games/nationals videos, I had to use google translate and use 240p videos for reference :).

Her name is Zhang Rong. If you write the characters in the background, you will see that is how you pronounce the characters in Mandarin. For some reason google translate spits out “Chang Yung” in the translation which is a type of Wade-Giles romanization but I use pinyin so her name is spelled ‘Zhang Rong’. There are different romanization systems but if you look type search ‘zhang’ and ‘rong’ in this list:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Chinese_romanization_systems

you will see it corresponds to “Chang” and “J/Yung”. Regardless of the spelling, we are referring to the same person.

张容 = Zhang Rong in pinyin or Chang Y/Jung in Wade-Giles.

What is the significance of this lifter? Her history is not promising. Has she recently been making such huge gains that she’s expected to become a gold medalist and challenge Tan Yayun or (recovered) Tian Yuan?

The significance is her warm up set is probably more than your PR and she will be better than you ever will be, keep lifting those fingers and dropping them on that keyboard.
