Alexander Varbanov 215.5kg Clean & Jerk World Record

September 8, 2012 By Gregor Winter

Here is Alexander Varbanov’s Clean & Jerk world record.

215.5 kg lifted on May 12, 1987 in Seoul in the 75 kg category.

Will it ever be broken?

It may take a while, but I think it will.

Especially when you read statements of Lu Xiaojun’s coach that Lu  “has reached 180 kg in snatch, clean and jerk 215 kg”.

By the way, if you are in Canada, you can get coached by the man himself. He is now a coach and director of the Varbanov School of Weightlifting at Academy Of Lions in Toronto, Ontario.

    ”
Insiders tell Lv Xiaojun technology is superb, in the the torsional link lifting, always foot axis, rather than twist the waist. ” – now that is some serious translation!!!! 😀

I remember seeing a quote by him quite a time ago, I believe it was on BB.com, posted by someone who trained with him. It went like this:

“If you want to be good weightlifting, train, train train, no quit, no drug, no drinkee, no girls…. Ok, girls are ok sometime (big smile/wink), but no drug no drinkee, that how you become champion.”

    (no typos)

    I had to save it!

      Hard work and focus …

I like to believe in that.

I was talking to Abadjiev today about Varbanov and he told me that he had cleaned 230kg in training and that his best front squat was 285kg…amazing.

Yeh, Abadjiev said “he have legs like bear”.

I was explaining to Varbanov one day that most of the people I do personal training with just want to look good, not be strong. He says, “ahh yes, I know this training… small bar, too many reps (disapproving head shake)”

The Chinese lifter weighs 2 kilos more than Varbanov when he did his great lift. So, if the current lifter does 216kg, he has actually not equaled the 1987 lift! I also find it compelling in an extreme degree that Bulgaria, with a very tiny percent of the population of China, could produce such a phenomenon with such a drastically smaller pool of potential talent to draw from. How much concentrated cordyceps does the Chinese lifter have? Varbanov probably had none.
