3 Biggest Powerlifting Totals of the Decade

March 15, 2013 By Gregor Winter

Everett uploaded some shiny new versions of the three biggest raw totals “of the last decade or so”.

Benedikt Magnusson – 1042.5kg (2298 lbs)

I don’t think many people realize just how great a full meet lifter he is because his deadlift overshadows his other lifts

380kg Squat, 220kg Bench, 442.5kg Deadlift

Peter Petras 1055kg (2326 lbs)

420kg Squat, 255kg Bench, 380kg Deadlift

Andrey Malanichev 1070kg (2359 lbs)

430kg Squat, 240kg Bench, 400kg Deadlift

Thanks to Everett for submitting.

Impressive, but not raw. Everyone used knee wraps.

These were all done in the raw divisions of these federations. If you’d like to use the term raw in an informal way and define it as you see fit that’s fine, buy just wraps and a belt are allowed in many raw divisions. It’s also worth noting that many weightlifters use wraps and a belt to squat and even use these in competition. In fact, wraps made of leather are allowed in IWF competitom and not in PLing. If you aren’t aware that wraps are considered raw in most big international raw competitions, you clearly have a very limited knowledge of the sport.

Everyone used knee wraps…… so can everyone use stop the BS… posting raw this.. raw that.. another website just posted biggest raw squats ever… everyone wearing knee wraps… pure BS… i think all this lifters are fantastic but there not raw totals. Standards are in place… Raw means NO KNEE WRAPS!

I suppose next you’ll start bashing Ilya’s world records because they were done with a belt and wraps.

No… of course not. lets stick to the subject at hand. powerlifting. wraps add a hell of alot to a squat. and to call these totals purely raw is not correct. raw with wraps would be more logical. Definitions for Raw are starting to become as undetermined as definitions for equipped powerlifting and all this does is dilute the competition. How do you justify allowing an item that has such a varying benifit between lifters to the division which was created to offer lifters a different format of lifting then the farcical areana of “equipped”.
        now thats just my opinion…..

SO lets just stick with the facts… when the term “raw” was created in the mid 90s there was definitely no kness wraps allowed…

Actually it’s only recently that people have become so restrictive about wraps in raw divisions. The IPF was the last fed to add a raw division and they don’t allow wraps. Furthermore, these totals were done in the raw divisions of these Feds, and I don’t have a problem with the raw with wraps terminology, but to call a 2300 total BS because of knee wraps is ansurd

Im sorry you think my post about the bs was about there lifts, it is not. there lifts are fantastic. the bs is the terminology. the original raw division that started in 1995ish did not allow wraps… Ray willaims does a raw squat of 390… then some one else uses says peter petras in better he did 420 raw…. this gives peter petras the unfair advantage of having a bigger squat… because he was wearing wraps… and its not unfari to say he might not of got 390 with out wraps.. so its harder to fairly compare lifters in different feds etc.
i cant argee with you on the “only recently statement” about feds.. no wraps has been this way in raw for 18 years at least….1995! so any other feds are copying the origianl… and the origianl is always best lol imo.
stricter definitions in powerlifting and less diluted classes would mostly serve the sport better. one ply… 2 ply 3ply.. the equipped definitions go on… the raw definitions are follwoing…… i dont see how people can think this is good for the sport…..

I see what you mean, but I (and most other PLers who know anything) wouldn’t say a 410 wrapped squat was superior to a 400 no wraps squat. I think we agree on most points, I just thought your original post was overly negative. Even without wraps, probably the only guy who can get close to these three is Misha. I bet Savickas, Lalas, and Radizkowski could put up huge raw totals too. They all have usually big squats for strongman competitors.

lol ur funny smart ass… tbh… i seen lalas training.. he runs a gym not to far from here, if he did a raw total it would be sick….

Malanichev is a pimp. He’s so brutally strong. While everyone is jerking off about guys here in the US he’s in some Russian missile silo drinking vodka, headbanging to Iron Maiden, and squatting and pulling near 1k.

Who cares about the wrap thing? It’s silly. A guy squatting 900 lbs, or cleaning 250kg in a pair of wraps and a belt? It’s amazing. Let’s not repeat silly shit here.

I don’t mean to knit pick as I love powerlifting but stan efferdings total was more than benedikt correct me if I’m wrong, pretty sure it was 2303lb/1044.6kg and at a lighter body weight 275lb/125kg class. Surely this would rank in the top 3 of the last decade
