Dave Tate teaching the Deadlift

July 9, 2011 By Gregor Winter

I am always eager to learn and re-learn different techniques and approaches to exercises.

After teaching us how to bench press and box squat earlier this week, today Dave Tate shows us how to deadlift.

His key points are:

Sumo Deadlift

  • stance: shins close to the bar, spread the floor, flare the knees out
  • drop straight down
  • bar directly touching the legs
  • pull back
  • the more momentum going backwards the better
  • drive head chest back more

Conventional Deadlift

  • align the bar with your quads
  • arch lower back, round upper back
  • shoulders over the bar
  • pull back
  • if you miss a deadlift, you should fall backwards, momentum should be taking you back
  • If you have a deadlift bar, first pull the slack out of the bar
