November 22, 2014 By Gregor Winter

Meanwhile in Kazakhstan … at the 2014 World Weightlifting Championships.

China’s Liao Hui has done it again, beaten world records that is.

He went for a World record in the Snatch with 166kg and a new total World Record with 359kg at his second Clean and Jerk, he skipped his last attempt.

Check out his 165kg Snatch and 200kg Clean and Jerk at the Chinese test event earlier this year.

The old record by Georgi Markov stood for 14 years!

Update 18.07.2016: New Version.

Update 22.11.2014: Slow Motion Added!

Here is his 193kg C&J which got him the Total World Record.

More: Watch his 198kg Clean & Jerk World Record from Poland here.

Jesus, that was insane. He stood right up; no pause; no hesitation, and made it look sweet and easy. Looks like he could have done more, but sometimes, a master (snatch) technician makes his max lifts look easy when even 1 more kilo is impossible. Anyway, Markov can’t be too happy about that…

So happy he got it after all these years…especially after a cheeky pressout at 160.

after the snatch WR i knew that he would go for total and not take 3-rd. but i was hoping for a round number 200 CJ)

I was hoping he’d take 194 and hit the 360 round number. When he has 2 attempts left, he can afford to be a bit riskier with the extra kilo, especially since 194 is not a big risk for Liao Hui at all. Maybe he wanted to take it easy (if 2 WRs instead of 3 qualify as taking it easy LOL) and not risk bursting his hand wound open right after the stitches came off.

Anyone notice the Romaleos he is wearing (assuming it is a Romaleos)? Is that a custom Chinese version (assuming based on the colouration) or is it available commercially?

The shoe brand is called “Anta” they are the new sponsor of the Chinese Team. Some athletes however still wear Nike shoes.

Liao Hui is very lucky for what happened to Oleg Chen. His coaches fudged up the time to change weight and he ended up with the CPU-generated 1 kilo increase to 154. Chen wanted to go for 156 for the second attempt. If he made that, the would have pushed Liao’s 155 to silver. If this had happened, and Liao had missed his 160 as he did, Liao may have had to re-attempt 160 to secure the gold, dropping his 166 opportunity. But it’s also important to note that the Chinese coaches said that Liao Hui failed his 160 because of lack of will. It was a meaningless lift for him since it wasn’t any kind of record, he already had the gold with 155, and he absolutely didn’t need the extra 5 kilo heading into the clean and jerk. I’m personally guessing that he took it simply because 155 to 166 was too big of a jump so he had to get a lift in between and with the time limit, it was going to be either getting that 160 in the warm-up room or getting it on the stage. Also, the Chinese reporters said that at some point, Liao Hui’s wound re-opened, though I’m not sure if they meant in training or in the warm-up room. It wasn’t on a competition lift though.

It was the CCTV5 broadcast of the event, with bits of info strewn about the entire length of the competition.

Have you thought about that if Oleg Chen snatched that 156 Liao Hui would have taken his 160 more seriously?

I think that consideration was written right in the paragraph. I’ve also thought about Liao going for less weight than 160 to beat Chen’s 156.

saying that Liao was very lucky is a fairly big overstatement, since he is overwhelmingly stronger than competition in both snatch & cj. Let’s just agree it made things easier for him..Thanks for the info anyway

Oh, he undoubtedly would have won, no problem. It would have taken a catastrophic event to even take Liao out of his comfort zone. Chen could have snatched 10 more kg than Liao and Liao would still have handily and comfortably turned it around in the clean and jerk, but I mean Liao was lucky in that Chen’s misfortune it set it up for him perfectly to attempt the WR without risking losing the snatch gold.

I saw that too, but his arm was still straight, just coming slightly out of lock; he definitely didn’t press it out. If the judges start red-lighting things like that, weightlifting’s gonna start to take on a whole new dimension where people start to get more worried about form than lifting huge weights.

They should clone Liao Hui and make them lift against each other. Then, we’d see some real max-outs instead of this inching the total record forward kg-by-kg, always reserving some power for future performances. I wonder how high the numbers would get then LOL
